40 years of service

2023 marked the 40th Anniversary of the Hunnaball Family Funeral Group.

It was a time of thanksgiving and celebration because we’re very proud of the work we do, the way in which we do it, and the people who work for us. So we threw a party, said a HUGE thank you to our amazing team, and enjoyed some well-earned fun.

It all began in Wix in 1983, since when we have opened branches all over Essex and Suffolk; from West Mersea to Sudbury, Ipswich to Chelmsford, and, of course, Colchester.

In due course, Saul, Chris, Polly, and more of the family have joined us on the journey, truly making Hunnaball a family business. And now Emilia has joined us, making three generations working together. We have our silver fleet, incredible frontline staff teams, Ladies in hats, and so very much more to be thankful for.

Water and Fire

In June, we took part in the enormously popular and fun “Brave Futures Dragon Boat Race” in Ipswich harbour.

Our two teams had an amazing time and the race between them was something to see.

But most important, we helped raise awareness for an amazing charity and contributed to the more than £45,000 raised on the day.

On 10th October, we partnered with another amazing charity, Mid and North Essex Mind, sponsoring and taking part in their annual “Fire Walk” at Writtle

University College, near Chelmsford. The event was to mark World Mental Health Day and eight of our team walked the coals and raised over £500 for Mind!

Community involvement

This year, our excellent team have been involved in a wealth of community events including the unveiling of the Stanway Covid memorial, a fundraising concert for Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals, St Helena Hospice Dedicate a Daisy, and an evening in aid of Acorn Village, Manningtree.

We have sponsored cultural projects including the Braintree Male Voice Choir and Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. We’ve also held our own Light a Candle events, and in December, we’re welcoming everyone to our local branches to write a dedication in memory of loved ones in our annual Name a Star commemoration. We love being so deeply involved with our local communities.

Trevor’s Award

July was very special, as Trevor Hunnaball, our chairman and founder, was honoured by the National Association of Funeral Directors and SEIB with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

A fitting tribute to a true gentleman who has worked with compassion and professionalism in the funeral industry for more than 65 years. Congratulations Trevor, from all of your work family.

Honouring our ancestors

We have been privileged to help the Colchester Archaeological Trust and the people of Colchester by installing a special new gravestone, made by our memorial masons, in the grounds of Colchester Cemetery.

It marks the site where centuries old human remains, found in archaeological digs around the city, have been laid to rest with the utmost respect. These long-ago Colchester citizens now have a place of honour and remembrance in their local community.

A New Home for Stanway

Hunnaball of Stanway has moved into fabulous
new premises.

Our team have done a wonderful job refurbishing the building to provide a beautiful, welcoming and warm place to meet with us.

We’re now at Waveney Cottage, 13 London Road, Stanway, Colchester, CO3 0NR.
